Since technology has entered our homes, the concern about the use we make has been increasing. And above all they are families and educators who wonder where the limit between the necessary knowledge and the indiscriminate access by children and young people is. They are digital natives and their parents do not and, therefore, it is difficult to see the situation in the same way.
Tecnoatenció is a free service created by the City Council of Cornellà to answer these questions and promote the responsible use of new technologies. At the top there is Citilab and Tools of socioeducational services cooperative. The program operates from two different aspects. On the one hand, there is a service in schools and institutes, through prevention workshops for young people, where they are invited to use social networks and the 2.0 environment with responsibility and make them reflect on the use what they do. On the other hand, Tecnoatenció is also aimed at families and directly to adolescents and young people who need more personalized action, either because they detect a problem or because they want to know how they should act when technology generates a climate of controversy at home.
The reality is that many parents encounter these situations with uncertainty, because they have a great ignorance of the tools that their children handle. That is why it is common for widespread and harmful technology to be tapped, when what is needed is to have a critical attitude about the consumption that is being done.
How is an addiction detected?
According to the people in charge of the project, addiction has nothing to do with the number of hours a person faces before the computer, but rather with the attitude he faces with technology. And there are some alarm signals that can help us distinguish the hobby or the interest of a dependency.
- Discomfort when the person can not connect, technology becomes the main source of happiness
- Sentiment of excitement due to an excess of time connected, which results in a decrease in the hours of sleep
- Loss of appetite during long periods and little physical activity
- Difficulties to relate, little real socialization
- Increase in the need for activities carried out on the network
- Denial of the problem
- Default of academic performance
When several of these areas fail, it is when you have to start thinking that there may be a problem. In these situations, Tecnoatención offers psychological service and personalized attention to the people affected.
The organization of workshops in schools is one of the most effective tools of the program, as it allows to reach a group of young people in a collective way. Often digital natives understand a lot of technology, but it is more difficult for them to analyze the social reality they are in. Thus, it is not strange that they share on the Internet content that may end up damaging them, or even committing crimes without being too aware.
The talks are offered from 6th of primary and 4th of ESO, although they are also organized for students of educational cycles. Each workshop adapts to the age and evolutionary process of the participants. Tecnoatenció is available for schools, entities and citizenship of Cornellà de Llobregat for free. Since the beginning of the program, in September 2014, a total of 48 lectures and workshops were given, in which 1,516 students and 219 parents, teachers and teaching staff from schools and institutes of Cornellà de Llobregat were attended.
